@ Tink - It is possible that what you saw was a nudibranch -- or your first impression (a snail that somehow became separated from its shell) also could be a possibility. If it was a nudie, you might see evidence of its gills if you examines it.

You know, sometimes when I'm trawling the beach looking for shells, I'll come upon something that until now I've thought was a gastropod that got separated from its shell. Now I'm thinking that what I've seen on occasion is one of these "nudies". Interesting post, and great color in the photos, as always!
