Looking Forward to World Oceans Day, 2009

What: Masked Butterflyfish (Chaetodon semilarvatus).
About 18 cm (7 in) long, and almost always seen in pairs.

Where: I took this photo while diving at The Brothers Islands, Egypt.
This species is common in the Red Sea.

We would like to remind our readers that World Oceans Day is June 8, 2009.

Wear something BLUE for World Oceans Day this coming Monday!

Whenever I have posted a photo of this butterflyfish species people always ask, "Are they really that BRIGHT??"

Yes, they are -- and they're also very reflective, which makes them hard to photograph. Too little flash and the fish look okay, but the background is too dark; too much flash, and the background may look okay but the fish are just a glaring yellow blob.

One good thing about their color: they sure are easy to spot underwater!

Happy WW, everyone.

That vibrant yellow sure stands out among the other beautiful colors. Great shot!
I have a shirt with a big blue wave on it - I'll reserve it for Monday. :)

My post is here: Carletta’s Captures.

Butterflyfish, that's an interesting name for the species.
Probably got it's name from how the fins look pretty much like butterflies I guess.

I love those guys whether I encounter them myself in the ocean or see them here on your wonderful photo. What always amazes me what bright colors nature does come up with.

Thanks to all of our WW friends for visiting.

@ Napaboaniya - The Butterflyfish family has many, many species. Almost all are patterned and exceptionally colorful. That's how the family got its common name.

@ 2Sweet - I hadn't thought of using this photo as a computer wallpaper, but now that you mention it...

Don't forget - everyone wear some blue on Monday, June 8 for World Oceans Day.
