  1. I'm not sure of the species of this Giant Clam, although given its size and location, it is probably either T. squamosa or T. crocea. In any case, it is one of the smaller species, as Giant Clams go -- less than a foot (30cm) across.

    The flesh of the mantle varies in color, depending on the type of algae growing in the tissues. This one is nearly black with ivory speckles. Others can have greenish or blue color.

    And no, they don't snap at passing divers and trap them! That's just a myth. ;-}

  3. I am so glad I found your interesting blog. I love the ocean and have a large shell collection. Not from the great vantage point you have but as a beach walker. Oregon beaches are pretty lacking in shells but I do have a lot of agates. Love all the information you provide.

  9. We often found giant clams shells high up on the beach at the sailing club in Indonesia. The were old and badly weathered out but incredibly large, the big ones more than 3 feet across. It took a couple of large men to move one of the shells.

    The boat boys told us they had been thrown up on the beach along with very large pieces of rock and coral by the explosion of Krakatau in the 1800's.

    Cody told me he saw smaller ones when he was getting his diving cert off Palau Putri north of Jakarta. The mantles were blue or blue green. One of these days I am going to have to learn to dive! Such pretty things to see underwater.

    @ Nature Rambling - I love your Oregon beaches. I've found some interesting things while beachcombing in Oregon, including agates, sea glass, and a glass float -- but no shells!

    @ Shannon - I recently saw a show on TV about the tsunami from the Krakatau eruption. Glad you were not there then! I have some pictures of giant clams with green and blue mantles, which I will post (eventually).

    @ Nevin - So you still think it's the camera? (Sometimes it's the photographer...)

  23. @ Becky - The Bubble Coral vesicles are not very sift when they're plumped out like that, but they also can deflate!

    @ Kathy - The clam doesn't look to happy, does it -- has kind of a snide look, I think!
