I have no idea how many barracuda were in this school -- definitely in the hundreds. This magnificent barracuda school is a prime attraction for divers who visit Sipadan, an oceanic island in the Celebes Sea, off the coast of the Malaysian side of Borneo. I took this photo a number of years ago, but we understand that Sipadan still has schooling barracuda in huge numbers.

Happy Wordless Wednesday.

I was trying to figure out if the spiraling swarm was part of the school of fish, I'm pretty sure it is. Quite impressive :)

Hi Bobbie, thanks for the birthday wishes! My husband and I swam with barracuda in Bermuda some years back. All of a sudden they were just there and they swam past us and didn't bother us at all. We were snorkeling and just remained cool. We've done that with sting rays in the Caymans too.

I love how the circle of light at the top is echoed by the center of the schooling fish. Really impressive.

Really amazing. We were snorkling in Hawaii last year and came upon a two large barracuda. Got two horrible pictures while hyperventilating. Just a little scary. Of course, it was our first time snorkling.

There sure are a lot, I had no thoughts of young barracuda before your post. Thank you.
Happy WW! I have done the 'just pink,' 'just yellow," 'just red," and 'just green' in cars now. I will look for others, no 'just blue' that I know of yet.
Happy WW!

This is one of my favorites, Bobbie. The light gives it a dramatic effect. Amazing. Now I wish I had continued my diving lessons back in the Philippines ;)

P.S. Have you been to the Phils to dive?

What an incredible shot - were you a little bit nervous being so near to so many razor sharp teeth?

Thank you all for visiting and for your comments.

@ Catsynth - Yes, the fish in that spiraling swarm are the barracuda.

These are full-grown barracuda, not babies. They school during daylight hours, and they fan out at night to hunt as individuals.

They're not scary. They're really beautiful. They do this languorous water ballet.

I was positioned about 20 meters (60-some feet) below the barracuda school for this shot. The school kept moving so it took a number of shots to get one -- this one -- with the sunlight shining down through the water at just the right spot. ;-}
