This is a Mediterranean moray (Muraena helena), a kind of eel. It was living in a drain on the wreck of the Zenobia, -- the shipwreck off the coast of Cyprus that we've been telling about recently here on The Right Blue.
I know someone's going to ask "Does it bite?" The answer to that question is: it could -- but it didn't. :-D

The coral is exquisitely detailed.
Really frightening looking. When we were snorkeling in Hawaii last year, I was a bit back from the kids and my hubs when one shot out of the rocks and ate a fish in front of them. They were a bit freaked. I missed it. But I was the most afraid after that, lol!

Great photo, but the eel creeps me out.
The ducks in my WW photo are eating. The top of the log is coated with bird seed.
Yesterday I was at Sea World Jakarta, on a field trip with 2nd graders.(It is a very nice aquarium, it has NOTHING to do with Sea World as we know it in the states) The moray eel display was very popular with the boys in particular. The eels were very interesting to watch and far more beautiful than I thought they would be, BUT I think it would freak me out to meet one if I was out snorkeling.

great picture - since the kids were born, we have not done a lot of scuba diving, but I look forward to the time they are old enough so I can get back in it. I have never been to the Med to dive, I will put that on my list!

He looks quite at home in the wreck - as well as being very well disguised by all the corals around him!
Thank you all for visiting and leaving such interesting and personal comments. I see that many of you have had some kind of encounter with moray eels, if only at a marine park or aquarium.
They are indeed fascinating creatures, but although they are mostly docile creatures that mind their own business, you must never poke a moray, or try to grab it, or try to feed it. They can bite, and they will bite if they feel threatened, and the bite can be very nasty.
Better to observe them and appreciate them without disturbing them. ;-}
