This perky little fellow is called a Red-spotted Sandperch (Parapercis schauinslandii). He lives on the sand or on rubble slopes, usually at depths greater than 50 feet (15 m). He's a little guy -- only about 5 inches (13 cm) long, but he's a carnivore. He eats other smaller fishes as well as little crustaceans. We love the way these fish literally do perch on their sturdy little pelvic fins. I photographed this one at Honaunau Bay, Hawaii.

Your fishies are beautiful as always. It's been freaking cold here. A couple days at -39F, but it has warmed up. You know you have reached maximum winter decompression when -1F seems warm. Happy WW.

Small predators like this one are always fun to photograph. They are brazen enough to stay in view long enough to get a photo, but sometimes run for cover just as you press your shutter button!

For some reason his posture makes me think he is trying to look bigger than he is (and I don't know why I'm thinking it's a male fish :). He looks like he's protecting something.

Reminds me of the carnivorous fish we had when I was a kid. The dad fishes ate the babies and sometimes everyone else. Nice photo.
I love ocean life, I am going on a tropical vacation in feb. so I will be snorkeling and scuba diving...maybe Ill see one of these little guys.
